Cancers of the esophagus and stomach are usualy diagnosed at a late stage and therefor have a poor outlook for survival. Screening endoscopies for people at high risk for this cancer can increase early detection rates. A sharp increase in incidence of proximal GI carcinomas (GEJ and esophageal adenocarcinomas) as noted recently in the United States as well as other western populations as "the fasteset rising incidence."
